Colab, the first purpose-built material library in the UAE and Broadway Interiors have partnered to launch a competition aimed at design students.
Open to final year students, the competition challenges them to redesign the interiors of Colab incorporating a selection of material finishes.
Chris Barnes of Broadway Interiors came up with the competition idea to promote 'real world' design solutions, after the social business venture in Dubai's d3 reached out to him.
When it officially launches on September 13, students working solo or as a group are asked to develop a design concept for up to five walls or the floor of Colab.
This must be developed from a portfolio of materials from suppliers including Optimum Gulf, Dukta, Topakustik, Surface Eleven, Finsa, SherwinWilliams, FunderMax HPL, No Grey Area International, BSH Walls & Floors, Wow Factor and Shaw Contract.
Judges Chris Barnes (Broadway Interiors), Paul Bishop (Bishop Design & Rogue) and Kevin Maclachlan (NOMAD|K) will rate entries of creativity; design methodology; practicality of design; presentation of ideas; and selection of materials used.
Winners will be announced during Dubai Design Week ( November 9-14) and will have two-weeks on site with a contractor to realise their designs, so they can be exhibited at Colab for two years.
If successful, the challenge could become an annual event.
Chris Barnes, owner and founder of Broadway Interiors, says: “I'm really excited to have established a design competition for aspiring designers within the UAE.
"Design is such a rich and enjoyable vocation, so to be able to provide students with the ability to see their designs realized is fantastic and I am delighted to be able to offer them this amazing opportunity.
"I hope this platform can in some way, help the young design talent make that next step into the real world of practical design.”
Richard Wilson, creative director of Colab, said students are welcome to take a first-hand look at the space and review available materials.
Colab recently launched the SHARE / شا ر ك campaign targeting UAE university students working in creative fields, to promote online learning and discussion.
