For more than two decades, Summertown Interiors has been among the UAE’s leading and most sustainable contractors.

Offering superior quality interior fit out solutions, the company is also reputed for its green expertise and exceptional client service, specialising in commercial office, healthcare, and education projects for global Fortune 500 companies, government authorities and local businesses.

Its mission is to consistently deliver high-end sustainable interior projects on time and within budget, which helps clients achieve their environmental goals, improve energy, water and resource efficiency for building, create inspiring workplaces to enhance employee health and happiness and to deliver operational savings, increasing building value and decrease utility costs.

As a mark of its commitment to this ethos, last year Summertown launched ‘JOURNEY2030’ – its three sustainability goals that align with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s sustainability agenda, and includes external international green building standards.

Under the ambition to deliver 100 per cent sustainable projects, Summertown has begun 2020 by offering free Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified level certification to all clients with projects over 2,000 square metre and free ECO-SSI certification, its in-house green standard, for all projects under 2,000sqm. This key initiative has cemented the company’s green credentials in the fit-out industry by aiming to have all Summertown projects meet externally accredited green and sustainability standards by 2030, the company is doing its part to make the cities of the UAE more sustainable.

‘JOURNEY2030’ sustainability goals will also see Summertown Interiors aim to improve happiness and wellbeing and achieve zero waste by 2030, as the firm strives to be one of the happiest workplaces in the fit out industry and aims to reduce waste to landfill from its offices and projects by 50 per cent in 2025 and achieve zero waste by 2030.

Insight into Summertown’s business and sustainable practices is evident in its sustainability report that has been published annually over the last four years.

In accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative, the most widely adopted global standard for sustainability reporting, the report details its environmental, social and economic performance against eight material issues the company believes matters most to its business and stakeholders – economic performance; environmental impact; people; health, safety and environment; responsible procurement; community; technology and transparency and anti-corruption.

Making positive sustainability changes starts with personal commitment, and Summertown was the first in its industry to be awarded LEED Gold certification for its own office interiors and, in 2016, achieved another first in the industry – LEED Gold certification for its existing building; operations and maintenance (LEED EBOM). The company is currently pursuing WELL certification for its own office under the WELL Building Standard, which is the first global standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellbeing of people in buildings – the aim to be certified by the end of 2020.

Summertown’s recent projects show its commitment to sustainability in practice. French pharmaceutical company Sanofi turned to the fit out contractor when it sought a new a new workspace that facilitated collaboration and communication, had an outdoor feeling inside and could achieve LEED certification.

Working closely with designers Bluehaus Group, Summertown ensured the fit out at the 2,500sqm workplace in One JLT, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, incorporated both the greenery to emphasise a park theme and various collaboration and social zones under the LEED guidelines. The result is a fantastic sustainable space with a mix of indoor greenery incorporated into workstation zones, and collaboration areas.

With sustainability lying at the heart of the Summertown’s business, it was delighted to work on this project, said Marcos Bish, managing director of Summertown Interiors: “At Summertown we pride ourselves on our commitment to delivering high-end sustainable projects, working alongside architects, designers and project managers to fulfil our clients’ goals and support LEED projects."

Other notable projects recently completed by Summertown include a workspace for government body Smart Dubai Enterprise that incorporates formal and informal meeting and multi-functional spaces and a modern, stylish workplace for Swiss automation and instrumentation company Endress & Hauser.
