Returning as a silver sponsor of the CID Awards 2019 for another year is reputable carpet tile and luxury vinyl tile brand Interface, which claims to be the world’s largest carpet maker with operations all over the world.
The business was formed in 1973 when Ray Anderson realised the market needed something hard to find: flexible flooring. He came up with a solution to this problem by leading a joint venture with a UK company called Carpets International and a group of US investors to produce and trade modular carpet. This business capitalised on the office building boom of the late 1970s. Interface sales reached $11m in 1978 and they had increased to $80 million in five years by the time it floated on the Nasdaq Stock Market in 1983.
Interface has always had a big commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2016, the company launched an initiative called ‘Mission Zero’ to eliminate any negative environment impact created by the company no later than 2020. This ambition to be sustainable paved the way for considerable innovation and led to the creation of TacTiles – a glue-free installation system with an environmental footprint more than 90% below traditional flooring adhesives.
In 2017, Interface expanded into modular resilient flooring, a move that allowed customers to choose from an integrated collection of hard and soft tiles that can seamlessly fit together as part of Interface’s modular design system.
