Dubai-based interior design and luxury furniture importer Kart Group is one of the companies in a competition to work on the UAE Pavilion, designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
Mustafa Khamash, founder and managing director of Kart Group, the company behind projects for UAE’s Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation, told Commercial Interior Design the expo is high on his wish list of projects this year.
“We are in a design competition to design part of the UAE Pavilion, which has been designed by Santiago Calatrava,” he said.
As part of the design competition for the pavilion, designed by Calatrava to resemble a falcon in flight, Khamash said Kart Group is working on a unique interior style for the VIP lounge area of the four-storey building.
Further details on his inspiration for the interior design have not been disclosed, but Khamash has expressed a deep enthusiasm to participate in the expo, which will open its doors to the world in October 2020.
In conjunction to lining up work on one of Dubai’s most prominent projects, Khamash is calling on the country’s art and design community to “invest more in the education” of the next wave of talented architects and interior designers.
This comes after the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) launched two full scholarships – one for Dubai Holding, the other from Khamash – in collaboration with the Dubai Design District (d3).
A design competition to secure the scholarships is now open and will close in July, with the winner announced in August before starting the academic year in September 2019.
